Puerto Rican beans, Habicuelas Guisadas, make a great side to all sorts of main dishes. Most recently we made them to go with our Puerto Rican style pulled pork. The red tint of the beans makes them look really appetizing, especially served on a bed of white rice. They taste great, with a deep flavor that is rich and tangy. You’ll need to make some Recaito, which is Puerto Ricos version of sofrito, to make these right. You will also need Sazon. I haven’t been able to find sazon in any of my local stores so we order it online.
If you don’t want to order sazon online you can make a subsitute by mixing:
- 1 tsp Coriander
- 1 tsp Cumin
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 3/4 tsp black pepper
Puerto Rican beans should be in a thick sauce. The sauce is rich and adds a lot to the pinto beans.
