Chicken and Waffles is an iconic southern US recipe. It makes a great breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. The combination of sweet and savory is fantastic. The mix of textures keeps the dish interesting to the very last bite. I like my fried chicken a little bit spicy, so I use chipotle chili powder to bring some smoky heat to the recipe. I use 1 1/2 tsp to keep it hot. You’ll notice that the recipe calls for 1 tsp chipotle chili powder, which is what most people like but feel free to adjust the amount to your taste.
Using an air fryer makes this go pretty quick, without a lot of oil. I really like how the chicken still comes out juicy with a crispy breading. It’s that crispiness that is offset by the spongy texture of the waffles. If you choose to use a standard oven, bake it at 425º for about 30 minutes, then flip the chicken and bake for another 20 minutes. It won’t be as crispy, but it will work.
As a final note, it’s well worth it to buy real maple syrup for this instead of the cheap sugary syrup. The smooth texture and richer flavor that real maple syrup brings is well worth the extra expense.
